New dreams in the skies of the northern region: International airport and state-of-the-art airbase begin operations in Bogura

The government has taken the initiative to establish an international-standard airport, modern airbase, pilot training center, and cargo facility in Bogra with the aim of opening new horizons in the communication, trade, and aviation sectors of the northern region.Under the direction of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, a high-level delegation comprising the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Bangladesh Air Force, and the Ministry of Local Government arrived at Bogra Airport from Dhaka on Thursday (07 May 2026) morning at 10.30 am in a special Air Force helicopter.

The delegation was led by Honorable Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism Afroza Khanam Rita MP, State Minister Rashiduzzaman Millat MP, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam MP, and Chief of the Bangladesh Air Force Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan.
After the inspection, it was informed in the briefing that in addition to building an international standard airport in Bogra, a plan has been taken to build a 10,500 feet long runway so that domestic and international aircraft can land. At the same time, cargo facilities will be set up, which will play an important role in the agricultural, industrial and export trade of the northern region.

During the visit, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, Chief of Air Staff, said, “The Prime Minister has already given the initial approval for the air base. A state-of-the-art air base will be built in the northern region. This is my promise.” He further said that a full-fledged air base of the Air Force has already been approved for the northern region and modern training and operational facilities will be built there.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has informed that all the necessary infrastructure for the construction of an international airport in Bogra will be implemented step by step. An international standard flying academy and training center will be established here, providing opportunities for pilot training through government and private initiatives.Minister Afroza Khanam Rita MP said, “We have come to visit Bogra under the direction of Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. By utilizing the potential of the northern region, Bogra will be transformed into one of the aviation hubs of the country. The people of Bogra are truly lucky. The journey of this big plan of the ministry is starting from Bogura.”

State Minister for LGRD Mir Shahe Alam MP said that as per the promise made by the Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Tarique Rahman at Altafunnesa Sports Ground on April 20, the government has taken a long-term plan to develop Bogura as the economic and communication hub of the northern region. If an international airport, cargo facilities, training academy and international educational institutions are established, there will be a huge change in the economy, investment and employment of the entire northern region including Bogura.

Those concerned say that if an international airport and airbase are implemented in Bogura, it will open new possibilities in the industrialization, tourism, foreign trade and aviation sectors in the northern region. At the same time, it will also increase the country’s strategic and economic importance manifold.
