A strong and coordinated bilateral cooperation between the government and the media is essential to effectively highlight Bangladesh’s international success stories in combating climate change and environmental conservation at home and abroad. For this purpose, representatives of the South Asian Climate Change Journalists Forum (SACCJF) paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam on Wednesday and exchanged views.
The delegation was led by the Forum’s Secretary General, Senior Journalist Keramat Ullah Biplob. In the meeting, he emphasized on the coordinated cooperation between the government and the media to more effectively highlight the stories of climate change, environmental conservation and Bangladesh’s adaptation and success stories at home and abroad.
At this time, the SACCJF Forum presented several proposals to improve the skills of journalists, including international cooperation on climate issues, increasing opportunities for field-based reporting, and establishing Bangladesh as a regional climate communication hub. In addition, ensuring the participation of the country’s environment and climate journalists, along with government representatives, in the United Nations Global Climate Conference (COP) or international forums, which will further strengthen Bangladesh’s position in global negotiations.
In addition, it was said that Bangladesh’s various initiatives on forests, environment, biodiversity, climate adaptation, and sustainable development should be highlighted globally through international-standard documentaries.
The State Minister listened to the proposals with great interest and appreciated the constructive role of the media and journalists in raising climate awareness. He expressed hope for continued mutual cooperation in this regard in the future.
The South Asian Climate Change Journalists Forum (SACCJF) was formed to highlight the demands and expectations of South Asian countries to address the climate crisis globally. The organization is a regional organization of climate and environment journalists in South Asia, whose headquarters is located in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It works to raise the voices of South Asian countries to the world in addressing the impacts and crises of climate change.
